In 1999, 15 containers were discovered in a hidden chamber between the paws of the Sphinx. Inside were living creatures that could bond with a man or beast. These sysmbiotes, through accident and agency were released and people began waking up with powers. Governments and groups sought to control the powers and access to the symbiotes, but the harder they fought the more slipped through their fingers.
