Lake Oahe - Home of the CaNES (Center for Neurological Extension Studies, aka "Operation Rift Diver") Canes exists under the auspices of the Dept of Defense, Dept of Military Intelligence, Division of Psychological Warfare.
Canes is a top secret military research facility administered by Col. Hawthorne. currently Canes is occupied by the Col, a single squad of Paladins (212th Mechanized Infantry "Black Knights" Noah Alexander, Isaac Stern, David Stewart, and Greg Schulz), a security officer/XO(Nick Raceen).
Canes used to be an underwater marine research facility up until eighteen months ago when the nonprofit foundation went belly up and defaulted on the loans. Through a couple of misdirections the military purchased the facility and converted it for the study of the military applications of psychic phenomena. The facility had just finished being retrofitted to it's new purpose, the scientific staff as well as additional support and military staff personal were due to arrive over the next six weeks.
The facility itself is made up of two parts. On the surface is a warehouse proudly proclaiming to be owned Pale Moon Enclave. The Pale Moon Enclave was a new age pseudo religious organization that flourished between 2010 and 2023. In 2023 the Enclave ended violently involving nasty chemical weaponry (SD-227-M1) mass suicide. These weapons have an effective half life of about 3 years (now 1/512 effectiveness aka quite harmless). In 2023 the area was declared a "hazardous no travel area." The area has been safe for nearly a decade but it's status has never been changes. It is in this area that the warehouse and ex meeting house is located.
Inside the meeting house concealed in the flooring there's an elevator shaft that tunnels some some 600 feet straight down. The Elevator is capable of supporting up to 100 tons and is quite durable. At the bottom of the shaft is a tunnel 20ft on a side with a conveyor system stretching 2 miles to north under the bottom of the lake. This ends in a second elevator shaft, this one going up.
This Elevator Shaft is the central shaft of the center's second part. The main
part of the Canes is located almost 2 miles into the lake on the bottom of the lake
floor. The center stands nine stories tall, but the bottom 4 stories are under
ground. The Canes is circular and arranged around a central
cargo elevator. The top floor used to be an observation deck and it is still set
up for that, however the glass is covered by metal shielding making the visibility
really bad. The eighth and seventh floors are labs specializing psychic field effect,
and medical testing. The sixth floor is administrative and command
offices, the fifth floor are
living quarters separated into four distinct areas. The fourth floor is the supply/armory
and general storage rooms. The second and third floors are covered by heavy machinery
and life support equipment. The bottom floor has Powerarmor maintenance and staging areas.
Col. Hawthorne
NPC - Col. William Hawthorne
Hawthorne is in his early 50s with brown/gray hair. His posture is impeccable and he doesn't smile. He spends hours watching the fish from his office window with his hands tightly clasped behind his back. There are no signs of family pictures on his desk (hidden in his top draw so the tragedy isn't made to personal. Shoved into the corner of the desk are some carved ivory figurines (these are either very old and expensive or very illegal) The rest of the office is covered by color coded satellite maps and eyes only databooks.
NPC - Maj. Nicholas Rayceen
Maj. Nick Rayceen is in his late 30's and is a large black man. His hair is close cut and he sports a goatee. He is almost fanatical in his single-minder pursuit in doing his job. Right now he percieves his job as maintaining Canes security. He will let nothing comprimise that. In opposition to Rayceen's straightlaced visage, Rayceen is a big fan of jagged fusion music. Before he was isolated he used to play guitar in a band, Anti-matter Bliss.
NPC - Lt. Isaac Stern
Isaac is more of a battlefield medic than a doctor in any real sense, but with the facilities of the Canes he can handle most problems. Isaac keeps his head shaved and his eyes are dark brown verging of black. Despite his name Isaac clearly has Hispanic blood in his background. When either saving or ending lives he is serious and efficient, in quieter times he is a bit of the philosopher in him.
NPC - Lt. Noah Alexander
When Noah was between the ages of 12 and 15 he was known as "Sacred Dust" and known as an accomplished hacker. He was caught for crashing the local net sector. Due to his youth and other factors he sentence was relatively light. He was forbidden from in engaging in computer activity with more depth than email or library research. He was further sentenced to eight years of military service. Oddly enough he prospered under the watchful eye of the military, he managed to put his past behind and move on with his life.
After the invasion Noah managed to hack into one of the few remaining satellites using it as eyes Noah managed to collect some very rough Intelligence about the alien location and strength and where fighting continues. Two days ago the satellite was destroyed and no replacement has been found.
Noah is of average height and has long curly brown hair that is regularly in his eyes and reaches to his shoulders. His eyes are blue but have a tendency to get a sort of vacant look.
NPC - Lt. David Robinson
David stands 6'3", blonde hair, blue eyes, and well muscled. He is every mans nightmare and (at least in his mind) every woman's fantasy. David was built on the old fighter pilot mold, ego and all. He is a big time gambler and this whole invasion has played havoc with his habit. David has no mind for math (except odds), science, or philosophy. David is not in touch with his feminine side, or his inner child.
David is good with a gun, powerarmor, and cards and that's enough for him now if only their were some women around.
NPC - Capt. Greg Schulz
Schulz is the squad leader. His hair is bright red and his eyes are black. His face is wrinkled and creased beyond his his years and he has scar on his left cheek. He's had it since he was child, in his long past youth he weak and vulnerable and was beat up regularly, as he grew into adulthood he's over compensated for this early weakness. He's a hard taskmaster but in his heart he does to save his students/squadmates from the pain he felt from being vulnerable. He is fiercely protectived of the Black Knights in body, name, and spirit. He's spent some time in various brigs for escalating desparging comments about his squad to brawls.
He almost always has a drink in his hand but only sips from it sparringly one drink could last him all night. He's alert and pays attention to everythin and gives the impression that everything is being analyzed for a less obvious purpose.
There are very few earth satellites left in orbit.
There are a slew of alien starships in orbit.
Canes had comm to ANMCC and Ft. Powell in Maine but has since lost connection to both. There is visual (sat) confirmation that ft Powell has been taken.
